About the author
Born on a farm in western Iowa, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps at 17, and was sent to Coe College for a year of ASTRP pre-flight preparation. Near the end of WW II, all flight schools were closed, ending his dream of becoming a pilot. He spent a year in Japan as a clerktypist for the army. He has a BA from Grinnell College, and an MST degree from the University of North Dakota. He taught high school science for 36 years, first in Iowa, and then in Arizona. He is 82, in deteriorating health, and lives in relative seclusion with Sandy, his wife of 50 years, in Tucson, Arizona, getting out of the house only to go to the doctor’s office, or the hospital. He is still smiling.
